๐ŸŽป The Book Collection every Suzuki and Irish Fiddle Enthusiast Needs

Hi Reader!

Another Find your Lilt episode is on its way to your earbuds tomorrow (I'm releasing new episodes twice a month on the 15th and last day of the month). If you're not already friends with my guest, I think you're going to want to be by the end of the discussion!

From my early days of teaching Irish fiddle, I've thought about how valuable it would be to have a method book that applies technical training to the Irish fiddle style -- much like etudes in the classical world.

So my ears perked up when I heard that Mary Vanorny had a set of resources that combine the Suzuki violin learning method (how I was first trained for the first 10 years of my violin journey) with Irish fiddling.

It's always interesting when I'm on a call with a new student, and they ask me what my plan is for them. Granted, this has gotten easier to say over time, but I've found that every person's process is so different that it's hard to say "everyone start from point A, then point B".

I think it's because I pieced my Irish fiddle learning together bit by bit, and never had a truly formal training with private lessons like I did with my classical training. So if I don't have a set model for how I learned, how then do I communicate to a student what their model is going to be?

It's a very interesting process, and one that I enjoy putting together individually with students based on their goals. But admittedly it would be nice to be able to clearly articulate an order of tunes that build essential techniques on the fiddle -- and that's where Mary's books come in!

I highly recommend tuning into the interview tomorrow when it goes live (or at your earliest convenience) to get more of Mary's backstory and approach, but if you're already curious about the books and want to check them out here, then you can!

Weekly Tune Library Update

โ€‹The Job of Journeywork is live in the Tune Library for you now! This week turned into more of a podcast interview week with Liz Carroll and Matt Cranitch -- Matt's interview is happening tomorrow, so if you have any burning questions you want me to ask him, send me an email sometime in the next 24 hours!

I figure since your membership helps me to run this podcast that you should get member-exclusive sneak peeks and perks. :)

I'm excited for you to hear Mary's interview -- and curious if you're a fellow Suzuki-trained fiddler like Mary and me?

Happy practicing!

~Hannah
